Distinguishing features
Annual plants with glumes that lie side by side rather than facing each other. Glumes and lemmas unawned.
Description
Plants annual. Culms to 35 cm tall.
Leaf sheaths densely and shortly hairy; auricles well developed; blades densely and shortly hairy; sheaths of innovations closed (connate) when young.
Inflorescences 5-17 cm long, with 7-17 nodes with solitary spikelets; rachis internodes at mid-inflorescence about as long as the spikelets; rachis disarticulating below the nodes.
Spikelets appressed to the rachis, with 1-2 florets. Glumes displaced so that they lie adjacent to each other and cover the florets, 6-12 mm long, not keeled. blunt, unawned. Lemmas nearly as long as the glumes, not keeled, unawned.
Caryopsis not adhering to the lemma and palea, but enclosed by the glumes and rachis.
Size
There are two species in Henrardia, H. persica and H. pubescens.
Distribution
From Turkey east to the western Afghanistan, the Pamirs, and central Asia, south to Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq.

Both species are diploids
